I'm studying TCM and can't work out the relationship of Yuan Qi and Kidney Qi. Are they the same thing or are there differences -if so what and how are they related?

In my understanding, they are basically the same, only when and how they are mentioned.
Kidney qi may be mentioned when physicians want to stress on the state of kidney itself, e.g. conditions associated with kidney qi deficiency
Yuan qi may be mentioned when physicians want to stress on the effects of kidney to the overall body, a more general description, e.g. yuan qi deficiency is equivalent to immune weakened or under functioning of the body.
